Single-mode fiber is an optical fiber designed to carry light only directly down the fiber. It is used mainly for long-distance communication, such as for connecting two buildings on a college campus. It has a small core diameter, typically 8-10 microns, and transmits only one mode of light. This allows for a much longer transmission distance than multimode fiber, which is used for shorter distances. Single-mode fiber is also more resistant to signal loss due to its smaller core size and the fact that it only transmits one mode of light. This makes it ideal for applications that require long-distance transmission, such as connecting two cities or countries. It is also used in high-speed networks, such as those used for data centers and cloud computing.
